Title: Pretenses
Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: Rose Tyler, The Duplicate Doctor, Jackie Tyler

She could almost pretend that the TARDIS hadn't disappeared in front of her.  Almost.

His hand was warm in hers, and she glanced at that beloved and familiar profile out of the corner of her eye.  He was the Doctor - and he wasn't.  His hand was too warm, slightly too clingy in hers, and he was a little too quiet.

Her mother was on the phone yelling at someone over the wind - probably Pete - with the ease of long practice Rose blocked out the sound and stared at the space where the TARDIS had stood in shock.  He'd gone and left her here - with himself - almost.

She swore bitterly and pulled her hand from the Doctor's (was she really going to call him that and what the heck did she say to him) and stalked towards the water.  He followed her warily, she could sense his hesitance as she began pacing backwards and forwards.

"I CANNOT believe you did this to me again Doctor, thinking you know what's best for me."  She muttered under her breath as she paced.  The "blue" Doctor was following her as she paced almost crashing into her when she turned suddenly and paced the other direction.

"Rose?"  He said hesitantly, his eyes worried as she met them - the concern was the same, and there was a hint of fear underneath that called to something inside her.  She stopped dead while her mind continued to whirl with thoughts - is this the man she loves?

She stared at him a moment then grabbed him by the jacket and pulled him closer, putting her head onto his shoulder and stepping into his body.  After a moment his arms wrapped firmly around her, a hand stroking her back as they waited.

"C'mon you two" called Jackie "We're going to have to walk into town while Pete makes the arrangements to get us all home."

He pressed a kiss onto her hair and loosened his arms from Rose, she stepped back and visibly shook herself before turning and taking a step towards Jackie.   She stopped and held out a hand towards him, waggling her fingers invitingly.

He joined her, took  her hand and in together they walked to her mother who was now back on the phone again.  Their steps were perfectly synchronised, speaking of long practice walking together, her stride slightly lengthened and his slightly shortened so that they bumped shoulders and brushed against each other as they walked.

They all pretended that everything was completely normal as they walked the few miles into town.  Jackie spent most of the walk on the phone, but he caught her peering at him curiously a few times before she returned to her conversation.  He and Rose didn't talk, both of them scanning the countryside and glancing at each other out of the corners of their eyes.

The more they walked the more each of them felt that things were going to be okay - it might be just fooling themselves, but in a way it was almost like discovering any other planet they'd been on before - the Doctor could almost believe the TARDIS was back on the beach and that soon enough they'd be running back to it and on to the next adventure.  Rose could almost believe that he really was her Doctor.

And for now they were both comforted by the fact.  When they could see the town Rose suddenly swung their joined hands in the air and then with a grin, tongue poking from her mouth slight in that tantalizing way she leapt forwards and they were running, running on to their next adventure.  Together.
